Traveling around the world is truly a beautiful thing. Those who are able to wander frequently should consider themselves to be lucky. To be able to experience the different avenues of life that are simultaneously existing across the globe is truly a magical experience. Traveling alone has always been something I have loved to do. To meet the world with my most authentic self. To bring to this new environment everything I have to offer without trying to fill the shoes I have created in my pre-existing life. Something I have always loved to do while solo traveling is visiting architectural beauties as I feel they provide me with so much history. It is the ancient world architecture that serves as a looking glass into the past. The withering walls allow us to see how much time has passed in a given location. These buildings and structures give us insight on who once lived on the very grounds your feet rest upon. Yes, architecture is something that is so beautiful to witness as you dip your toes in the waters of the coastline. Today I will introduce to you my list of the seven architectural wonders of the world, as I believe they deserve to be appreciated by all. Join me on this journey.

What Is Architecture?

famous ancient architecture

I would like to take a brief moment to discuss what architecture is. Architecture is a word we throw around loosely in our everyday vocabulary, but do we really know what it means? By definition, architecture is the art of designing and/or constructing buildings. But everything is more than its definition. Architecture is indeed an art form. Without architects and their creative minds, the world would be lacking in richness. Think of every building as a sculpture, making our world a gallery, every city a different exhibit. Yes, architecture is a powerful thing which paints our world with color. The next time you are outside wandering the streets you call home, I suggest you slow down. Really take a moment to absorb the inspiring architecture which makes your home a home. What is the history that your home is built on? Slow down, and really look. Look, and appreciate. Allow yourself to enter a time machine to when these buildings were built. I promise you will find a new appreciation for the life which surrounds you. These are not just buildings; they are masterpieces that have been designed and constructed by some of the world’s most talented and important artists.

What Makes Something an Architectural Marvel?

Now that we have a better understanding of what architecture is, let’s talk about what makes something an architectural marvel or an architectural wonder of the world. There is no one definition which can explain what makes something an architectural wonder. However, there are some things that architectural wonders have in common.

Rich History

Something that many architectural wonders have in common is their rich, in-depth histories. Architects, as mentioned before, are artists. They are artists who feed off their external surroundings. They create buildings and structures which depict clear insight into what the aesthetic of a certain time period was. There are many buildings that can provide us with information on a specific time that perhaps textbooks could not. Over time, stories are easily lost and mistranslated, however what remains constant are the architectural wonders of the world. As time passes, the stories of the world pass by and through these buildings, leaving them with thousands of untold stories to share with those who will listen.

Another thing that makes something an architectural wonder, though not always, is originality. When something has qualities and characteristics to offer that have never been seen before, people are bound to be enamored. The human species loves new, because new things keep our minds stimulated. Although new inevitably becomes old, what remains is the originality of a building. Originality is something that will always withstand the test of time.

Something I have noticed that architectural wonders have in common is their ability to provide information and lessons. I believe that all great architectural creations have the ability to instill knowledge into the minds of current and future architectures to be.
