Now, Tokyo City Offers Renewed Toilets That Are Designed in an Artistic Way

Tokyo Transforms Uninviting Public Restrooms Into Unique Works Of Art

The government of the Shibuya city government in cooperation with the Nippon Foundation has decided to transform the dirty public toilets into art. That’s why 16 international designers and architects were asked to make a contribution to the renovation of 17 already existing toilets. The project is called Tokyo Toilet and it features unique works of art.

One of the new installations, A Walk in the Woods, is created by Kengo Kuma and takes place in Nabeshima Shoto Park. There, five huts are located, connected with the park’s plants and trees.

Among other structures is a public toilet which is made in the shape of three mushrooms. The installation is located in the forest near the Yoyogi Hachimangu shrine. The structures, designed by Toyo Ito, provide enough space and with the help of roofs give natural light and air.

In addition, streetwear designer NIGO worked on the public bathroom in Harajuku. The house, inspired by American culture, is located between high-rise buildings in Tokyo and also features space due to the roof.

Nine projects are already open for visiting, and the rest are going to arrive by March 2022.
