Tribute to Michel Laclotte. The Former Director of Louvre Passed Away Being 92 Years Old

Michel Laclotte passed away at 92 years old. The former director of the Louvre supervised changes in the establishment and culture of this legendary institution. Laclotte played an important role in the development of museums and art history and made a significant contribution to the evolution of the collections of French museums.

In 1987, he was elected director of the museum and participated in a ten-year project aimed at centralization of the museum’s departments, as well as restoration and enlargement of the museum’s historic house.

Michel was born in 1929 in a coastal town in northern France. He studied at Sorbonne University and then entered Louvre School. In 1965, he was named the chief curator of the Louvre’s painting department and diversified the museum’s classical collection.

In 1972, Laclotte took part in transforming an abandoned train station on the River Seine, into a museum that features the national collection of French art. When the museum opened, he was named its first director.
