A 41-Year-Old Jaider Esbell Died in São Paulo, the Cause of Death Is Unknown

Jaider Esbell Died in São Paulo

Jaider Esbell was found dead in São Paulo. The indigenous artist was 41 years old. It was reported that the man was found in his apartment on November 2. The cause of the death is still unknown.

The Macushi artist on the verge is famous for his work Bienal de São Paulo which brought his international recognition. In addition, he was the curator of the Moquém_Surarî: Contemporary Indigenous Art exhibition which was held in the Museum of Modern Art. In October, the artist’s two works had been acquired by the Parisian Centre Pompidou.

The painter referred his works of art to activism. His drawings often depict animals painted in bright colors who were interacting with the landscapes. In such a way, Macushi portrayed his views about nature and myths.

A guerra dos Kanaimés

One of his latest paintings, A guerra dos Kanaimés, shows a conflict between deadly spirits common in tales. The spirits that live in the shadows of a forest, depicted in the pictures, were used as a metaphor for the dangerous forces. However, the artist considers the dark spirits as good forces because their toxins may also cure.

While Esbell was growing up, he took part in various social movements. When the artist turned 18 years old, he left his village and started to work as an electrician. He had been occupied with this job for 20 years, and only in 2016, he decided to focus on art. The indigenous rights activist traveled a lot meeting with members of the groups in Brazil. All those acquaintances shaped him as an artist and activist. Esbell, who had a degree in geography, taught himself how to draw and paint.

The sudden death was shocked to friends and fellow artists who are continuing to express their deepest grief.
