the Man of Sorrows

After a record sale of Sandro Botticelli’s painting for 92 million dollars last year, Sotheby’s is putting up another auction of a 15th-century Renaissance artist. The auction house has announced that it will sell a painting called The Man of Sorrows, painted in 1500. The event will take place in January 2022 in New York. The work will be auctioned with a guarantee and is expected to reach 40 million dollars.

The Man of Sorrows is a portrait of Christ with a crown of thorns, whose head is surrounded by flying angels forming a halo. In the late 15th-early 16th century, when Botticelli entered the final stage of his life, the artist’s faith grew. He began to create religious portraits that differed from his previous works.

Only three portraits of Botticelli of the late period are known, including The man of Sorrows. This fact makes the portrait a rare work among the works of Renaissance artists.

The price of the painting is expected to be the second-largest achieved by Botticelli’s works at auction. Interestingly, the picture has not passed from hand to hand since the ’60s. The last time the canvas was exhibited at auction was in 1963. Then it was sold at a fairly low price- 13.6 thousand dollars. Recently, the painting was exhibited publicly only once, in 2009, at a special exhibition in Frankfurt. Before selling in New York, the painting will be exhibited in Hong Kong and then be introduced to auction houses in Los Angeles, London, and Dubai.
