British-Nigerian Artist Yinka Shonibare Presents African Masks at His 7th Exhibition

Yinka Shonibare

The gallery, under the direction of Stephen Friedman, is hosting the seventh exhibition named African Spirits of Modernism where the works of the British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare will be presented. The visitors of the exhibition will see quilts, along with sculptures, and some African masks that perfectly reflect the artist’s identity. All the works are completed by archival material about the growing interest in African art which was common in Paris in the 1920s.

These new artworks examine the link between African aesthetics and Western modernist expression, offering discussion about African’s diaspora in modern society.

Yinka Shonibare Exhebition

Brightly colored textile quilts, designed with embroidery and appliqué techniques, are combined with a background of diamond patterns. His works show Picasso’s love for objects, namely those where metamorphosis between man and animal is.

For Yinka, this show is an attempt to understand the heritage of African aesthetics and connect his culture with modern history. He thinks that Africa’s contribution to modernism has never been well approved.

Yinka Shonibare was born in 1962 in London, and then moved to Nigeria when he was three years old. Now he lives and works in London.
