Klimt’s Burnt Works of Art

Artificial intelligence has restored the paintings of Gustav Klimt, called Faculty Paintings. The cycle of the works of art was created at the end of the 19th century by order of the Ministry of Education for the University of Vienna. The Austrian artist illustrated the faculties but because of the naked bodies, the paintings were never hung at the university. All the time they were kept at Immendorf Castle which is located in Lower Austria. But during the war, German troops burned the building and the paintings along with it.

The restoration of the paintings was undertaken by Google specialists together with the curator of the Austrian Belvedere gallery Franz Smola. Artificial intelligence analyzed about 92 thousand paintings and then separately the paintings of Klimt in order to understand his original style and reproduce during the coloring of the paintings.

Neural Network Has Recreated the Burnt Paintings of Klimt

Once the color information was obtained, Emil Wollner devised an algorithm to use Dr. Resin’s research to reconstruct the paintings. Instead of manually coloring paintings, the neural network produced statistical analyzes of Klimt’s existing work and mimicked the artist’s style to make the paintings historically correct. The results can be viewed at the digital exhibition, which also has an audio guide.

Gustav Klimt is an Austrian decorator, painter, and master of architectural interior design. His monumental, decorative, and pictorial works are characterized by stylization, symbolism, and eroticism. His painting The Kiss is one of the most replicated works of art.
