The famous painter was born in 1483 in Urbino, which in the 15th century became one of the centers of humanist culture. Raphael’s first teacher was probably his father Giovanni Santi, a rather mediocre painter, and from 1495 he studied with the local master Timoteo della Vite.

An early awakening of his talent gave Raphael access to the Urbino court and the humanist circles concentrated around him.

Raphael’s earliest surviving works were made around 1500 – 1501, that is, around the age of seventeen. These are the small compositions Saint Sebastian and the Angel, as well as the altarpiece of the Colonna family. The altarpiece was originally intended for the convent of Sant’Antonio in Perugia; in the 17th century the altarpiece was divided; the middle board is of the Colonna family’s heritage; the lunette and the predella are also preserved in the Metropolitan Museum.

In 1500 Raphael Santi left Urbino for the main city of Umbria, Perugia, where he entered the workshop of Pietro Perugino, head of the Umbrian school. As Vasari tells us, Raphael so deeply assimilated the manner of Perugino that it was impossible to distinguish the work of the two masters. A number of works were done jointly by teacher and pupil.

This reflected another specific quality of the young Raphael Santi – his great internal flexibility and creative responsiveness, the ability to deeply and organically get used to the system of images of different masters.

But with all the closeness to Perugino in the independent works of Raphael, created during his stay in Umbria, the superiority of his talent is obvious. Raphael Santi’s creative progress was so rapid that Perugino’s studio soon became too small for him. In 1504 the young painter moved to Florence. The artistic atmosphere of Florence during these years was saturated with new influences.

It was the time of Michelangelo’s first great creations and his rivalry with Leonardo in his work on battle compositions for the Council Hall; it was during this period that the principles of High Renaissance art began to spread among an increasingly wide range of artists.

Raphael designed St. Peter’s Cathedral and built the Chigi Chapel of the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome.

The artist glorified the earthly existence of man and the harmony of spiritual and physical forces in the murals of the Vatican stanzas, thus achieving a perfect sense of proportion, rhythm, harmony of color, unity of figures, and majestic architectural backgrounds.

Today we can observe numerous depictions of Our Lady, the artist’s artistic ensembles in the murals of the Villa Farnesina and the loggias of the Vatican. While in the portraits, the ideal image of the Renaissance man is created.

With classical clarity and sublime spirituality, the author embodied all the life-affirming ideals of the Renaissance. His early works are also imbued with elegance and soft lyricism.

On a neutral olive background, we see not only the portrait of Raphael but also the face of a young man, half-turned to us. He looks down from the painting with a slightly detached, dreamy gaze. You can see that the young man is full of serious thoughts. His face is a bit sad, he hides some secret worries and sufferings in his soul.

The structure of the hero’s face suggests that in front of us is a strong and resolute man , full of plans and a thirst for creativity. A storm of passions is sleeping in him, but he shows us only a part of his thoughts. This man is able to hide his true feelings under the guise of polite indifference. He considers his viewers unworthy of reading all his lofty thoughts in his eyes.

The young artist is dressed in a white shirt, over which a strict black robe is thrown. Raphael has a small dark hat on his head. With such a detailed self-portrait (Raphael) description of the appearance, we can say that the author of the painting took care of his appearance, but did not want to accentuate it. He seeks to show a simple image that has actually been carefully considered.
