Experts Assumed Tate’s Unusual Painting Tahitian Gauguin Fake

Tate’s unusual semi-painting, semi-sketch is rejected as experts think the style and the nature of the composition is not painted in the artist’s style.

After Tahitian Gauguin was suspected as a fake, it was excluded from the catalog of Gauguin’s work, published by Wildenstein Plattner Institute before.

The painting was bought back in 1917 by Roger Fry, who is known as an art historian and the person who founded and proposed the term Post-Impressionism.

Tahitians is considered a unique work of art due to its incompleteness: some parts of it are painted on paper using oil, while others are mounted on canvas. On the left, we can see a Tahitian boy, and a part of the landscape shows palm trees and mountains and is painted in oils. Three women are sitting inside a wooden hut, and they are sketched in charcoal. The woman who is lying in the center of the composition is drawn in blue crayons.

The decision to exclude the painting from the catalogue raisonné was proposed by Richard Brettell and Sylvie Crussard, who had cooperated together for 20 years. However, the reasons are not revealed.
