The Artist From Denmark Took Museum Money, Calling His Actions a Work of Art

The Artist From Denmark Took Museum Money

Danish artist Jens Haaning is at the center of a scandal. He borrowed about 84,000 dollars from the museum and refused to return it. He called the disappearance of money the Take the Money And Run action.

On September 25, the KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art gave money to the artist to reproduce his early work and fill two glass containers with real euros and Danish krone – as an illustration of the annual income of Denmark and Austria.

Under the agreement, the activist is due to return the money after the exhibition ends in January 2022, but he refused. Instead of an installation with banknotes, the museum received two empty frames. The museum’s management said that the artist must return the money, otherwise, a statement will be filed with the police.

As noted by Haaning, he initially did not intend to recreate the past work of art, and instead decided to speak out against the reality in which many are forced to exist without receiving enough money for their work.

Haaning also had some interesting work earlier. One of them was called Turkish Jokes.
