The Night Watch, Painted by Rembrandt, Was Restored by Artificial Intelligence

One of Rembrandt’s works of art, known as The Night Watch, which the artist painted in 1642, is a bright symbol of Dutch art of the Golden Age. But after the death of the artist, the painting was badly damaged during the unsuccessful transportation in 1715. The authorities of Amsterdam city wanted to put the art in a gallery between two doors, but it was too large and didn’t fit in. But instead of finding another place, some fragments were deleted and then lost.

Now, centuries later, the painting has been restored with the help of using artificial intelligence technologies. The Rijksmuseum, located in the Netherlands, has had the painting since 1885, and it is considered one of the most famous paintings in the whole collection. In 2019, the museum started a million-dollar project, and this is the 26th repair of the work.

The museum invited Rob Erdmann to lead the restoration, who used three principal tools for the work: the remains of the original painting, a copy of the original painting that was made before its damage, and Artificial Intelligence Technology.

The AI print was then applied to the original painting that wasn’t touched. However, the new pieces will be removed three months later in order to pay respect to the artist. The reconstructed painting is now presented at the State Museum and will outlast until September.
