This Year’s Winner of the Nasher Prize

The Nasher Sculpture Center chose the winner of this year’s Nasher Prize. Nairy Baghramian will get the award of 100,000 dollars. The Iranian-German designer is the sixth artist who has received the prize and is also the second German laureate.

Nairy’s sculptures investigate various representations of the human body, work, and the interaction between public and private places. She humanizes common methods of sculpture production such as modeling, molding, and casting, giving the mechanical processes an important purpose.

Nairy will visit Dallas in April to take the prize. As in prior years, public programs will be presented before the ceremony to present Baghramian’s works of art.

Dance, theater, and movement have been part of Baghramian’s works. Many of the ideas that she explores in sculpture, such as space, gender, and socio-political issues, originated in the world of dance. Her works also feature natural forms that seem to move and interact with the space they inhabit.

Baghramian uses silicone, resin, steel, marble, and concrete to create her sculptures and installations. She also analyzes the history of the materials to make installations that respond to a geographic region. One of her latest works consists of colorful marble blots that are connected by steel fittings.

Earlier this year, one of her shows was inspired by children’s toys. The colored pieces made of wood seem to work, but upon closer inspection, they don’t. Many of its parts end up in strange places, such as when passing or turning around a corner, and they often dangle or tilt like fragile bodies.

Before becoming a world-famous artist, Baghramian worked as a social worker in a women’s shelter in Germany for almost 25 years. Baghramian’s works can be seen in Paris, Chicago, New York, Belgium, London, Amsterdam, Minneapolis, Mexico City, and other cities.
