what is the watercolor

We have all as young kids painted with watercolors, not because we were trying to be the next big artists, but for fun! However, what is the history of watercolors? Where did it come from? What does it mean? Continue reading and you’ll get all your answers.

Watercolor Information

From the basics and initial question of what is watercolor made of?, we answer that this artistically used material is composed of a pigment (gum arabic) mixed with water, creating transparency through colors and strokes. As the paint is paired with the water, each brushstroke and decision reveals a lightened sense of its craft on canvas.

When was watercolor invented? The history of watercolor is said to have begun in the 1750s (18th century) with British tradition. But in fact, the artistic style of watercolor can be detected before the identified time. Though the colors are originally unveiled with delicacy, watercolor art was originally used for something more closely related to the manuscript. Back in Medieval times, artists used watercolor paint for illustrated images within handwritten books.

Defining Watercolor

To define watercolor is to bring comparisons from other artistic styles and techniques. The manner of watercolor varies with the range as it can be (essentially) controlled by the artist themself. Because of its style resulting in rather alluring forms, the definition of watercolor and its representation through adeptness can be scaled to a certain desire and liking. The product of which watercolor conveys scales from the lightest of stroke-constructed art to the vibrancy extending to more intensity. Both gentle and prominent watercolor compositions expose a sensitivity to captivation and its invitation to understand its certain taste.

The Watercolor Meaning

Watercolor Information

Watercolorists work in a way opposite to the common painter. More commonly, an oil-painting artist uses the painting method of coating paint colors to generate the desired result on canvas. The watercolor artist works in the way of uncovering from paper to paint tone and overlay. Using the whiteness of the paper, watercolorists are guided by water and pigment strength to establish their expressions into a visual masterpiece. Rather than taking control atop the paper, the watercolorist succumbs to the demands of their canvas.

From the perspective, the watercolor art style and way of technique allow for the canvas to speak the art into life. Allowing the white color of the canvas and the influence of water, a deep red has the ability to arrive light pink by terms of use. By this measured way of artistic ambition, watercolor keeps its meaning through intensity and tenderness.

Watercolor characteristics vary through what craved stroke and strength of pigment will be used. If little water is added, the density and strength of the paint pigment will appear in a fashion that can convey a crayon-like texture. But, if the water is washed over such fervor, the painting will change form to a much more tactful feel.

Existing as a way to illustrate defining moments in time, the meaning of watercolor artwork serves high importance. From before the 18th century, to the current time and teachings, the definition of watercolor art can be respected and acknowledged as one of the most powerfully delicate structures of artistic craft.
