Film About the Babi Yar Massacre

One of the most well-known cruelties performed by Hitler’s Germany was the massacre that took place at Babi Yar in Ukraine. Then, in Kiev in just two days, more than 30,000 people were herded into the Babi Yar ravine and were killed. The September 1941 shooting by the Nazis was one of the greatest massacres committed in such a short time. A similar but smaller massacre of Jews took place in Belarus about the same time. After, the Nazis still continued to kill not only Jews, but also Communists, and gypsies.

The film coincided with the new exhibit, titled Stories of Survival, which will arrive on October 27. The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage will present a film series dedicated to the topic of the Holocaust and genocide. It will be based on Boris Maftsir’s book The Road to Babi Yar. It talks about the attack of the Nazis into Soviet territory in 1941 and describes the first 100 days of the occupation. The book also features interviews with historians as well as survivors and witnesses to these horrific events.

The visitors will be able to watch the film online and then enter a Zoom conversation with Israeli Maftsir, the filmmaker from Latvia.

Last year, to mark the 79th anniversary of the mass shootings at Babi Yar, an audiovisual installation of metal columns was opened. Later, a symbolic synagogue appeared, built by the project of the German-Swiss architect Manuel Herz. The 12-meter structure consists of two walls and resembles a book, which opens and closes with the help of special mechanisms. When opened, the book turns into an open wooden synagogue. Its walls are decorated with images of animals, floral ornaments, and texts of prayers.
