Hayao Miyazaki will return to full-length animation in his new work for Studio Ghibli. It will be the latest major project from the creator of Spirited Away and other iconic anime films. This became known from the last interview with the Japanese animation director. Rumors about the plot of a new full-length anime have been circulating since 2017.

The name of the future anime has not yet been disclosed, but the basis for its plot will be the book by Yoshino Genzaburo How do you live? written in 1937. It tells the story of the psychological maturation of a 15-year-old boy from Tokyo, who is going through the death of his father. The work touches on the themes of class equality, socialism, and Marxist economics. The anime could be completed in 2023.

Prior to that, the director had planned that the last full-length anime of his career would be The Wind Rises in 2013, based on a manga of his own composition. But for the sake of adapting How do you live? he decided to take up the big business again. Miyazaki’s last film to date is the short film Boro The Caterpillar, released in 2018. After that, the artist planned to retire due to visual impairment.
