McCurry said that he has been to Afghanistan more than 30 times during his career. Unfortunately, according to the photographer, the situation in the country has become terrible again. According to the National Geographic photographer, the problem in Afghanistan dates back to the early 1980s. McCurry recalled what the country was like when the Taliban first came to power in the late 90s and early 2000s. According to him, they constantly wanted to keep everything under control. He noted that there is hardly another country in the world where women are treated as badly as in Afghanistan.

Taliban first came to power

A native of Philadelphia, he got into the Afghan war by accident. While traveling in Pakistan, he heard about the civil war in neighboring Afghanistan, and at the end of 1979, he crossed the border, having previously changed into traditional Afghan clothes. In 1980, images of Afghanistan already brought him professional fame and the Robert Capa Medal. But the most famous photograph of McCurry is Afghan Girl, 1984. The picture hit the cover of National Geographic in June 1985 and became not only the most recognizable NG snapshot but also one of the most replicated photographs in human history.
